Irish singer and actor Stephen Gately, who along with Ronan Keating was one of two lead singers in the boy band Boyzone, has been found dead in Majorca at the age of 33.
An official statement on Boyzone’s website said that Stephen Gately had “tragically died” and that the band would be flying out to Majorca on Sunday. The statement also said that Gately had been on holiday with his long-term partner Andy Cowles when he died on Saturday.
The News of the World reported that Gately had gone out for drinks, returned to his accommodation and gone to sleep, but never woke up.
Gately had a Top 10 solo album in 2000, after the band’s initial breakup. Gately went on to appear variously in stage productions and on television programs as well recording further solo material. In 2008 he rejoined his bandmates as Boyzone reformed for a series of concerts and recordings.
The cause of death is unknown at this time.
'We are completely devastated by the loss of our friend and brother, Stephen. We have shared such wonderful times together over the years and were all looking forward to sharing many more. Stephen was a beautiful person in both body and spirit. He lit up our lives and those of the many friends he had all over the world. Our love and sympathy go out to Andrew and Stephen's family. We love you and will miss you forever, 'Steo'.' From Ronan, Keith, Mikey & Shane
